Survived by his wife, Laura Burney Harris, two nephews, William B. Cole, Lake Tahoe, CA, and Steven R. Cole, Huntersville, TN, Godson, Shannon Geyer, Jackson, TN, and a Goddaughter, Kay Ferrell, Nashville, TN.
Mr. Harris graduated from the public schools of Madison County and Union University in Jackson where he had a double major in Music and Business. He was a member of the University Symphonic Band, the University Jazz Band, and was Eminent Archon of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He was also a graduate and a part time instructor at the Kellogg Institute for Economic Development at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK.
While in college he began part time work in West Tennessee for the State of Tennessee in the new office of economic development, under the direction of the office of Governor Buford Ellington. He later worked as head of the West Tennessee Industrial Association; as deputy commissioner of the state Department of Economic and Community Development; and for some 23 years prior to retirement as Vice President of Economic Development at the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce.
His lifelong commitment to a career in economic development made him a major player in the economic growth of the area attested to by the location of major manufacturing and corporate headquarter businesses. He also received numerous civic and professional awards including the first "Fred H. Harris Outstanding Tennessee Economic Developer Award" established by the Tennessee Industrial Development Council in 1996. He was named an Honorary Life Member of the Council after serving on the Board of Directors of the Southern Economic Development Council; Tennessee Economic Partners; and the International Economic Development Council. On the International Council he was named a Fellow Member and given Honorary Life Member status.
After moving to Nashville in 1979 he joined the Hillwood Country Club where he served on the Board and as President in 1988. At the time of his death, he was a resident of The Hillwood on Post Road where he was a past president and treasurer of the Homeowners Association. He was a Methodist and member of the Andrews Chapel Methodist Church in Huntersville, TN.
A graveside service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, February 20, 2021 at the Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Huntersville, TN with Jean Jackson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, or the charity of your choice in memory of Mr. Harris.
