Betty Corinne (Sautter) Chapman, 96, formerly of Mt. Gilead, passed away at Morrow Manor Nursing Home in Chesterville on February 12th, 2021. Betty was born at her grandparents' home on St. Rt. 95 in Mt. Gilead on October 18th, 1924. She was the oldest child of Walter and Lulu (Burggraf) Sautter.

A proud 1942 graduate of Chesterville High School where she attended with her husband, Bob, Betty cherished her school memories and remained life-long friends with Florence Kunze Lyman, Harold Baughman, and brother-in-law Gilbert Barrick. The annual school reunion was a highlight for both Betty and Bob.

Betty married her childhood sweetheart Robert Chapman on May 20th, 1945 at Harmony Methodist Church by Reverend Stanley Tippett. They shared 69 years of all the happiness and heartache that comes with nurturing a family of eight. Their lives were not without struggles; the Chapmans experienced the worst tragedy a person can- the loss of a child- twice, making it through by emphasizing the importance of family and love.

The simple things in life such as sitting under the breezeway watching the deer in her backyard, having a Klondike ice cream bar every night, and mowing her own yard until the age of 90 were what brought joy to Betty's life. One of her most memorable skills was being able to pack for a family of 8 for a weekend of camping at a moment's notice. Camping with "the couples"- The Killens, The Covers, The Bergers, The Kunkles, The Sellers, and The Furniss- as well as with her own family left Betty with stories and tales she would retell and cherish for her entire life.

Caring and composed, Betty was always sure to include their son Leslie, who suffered from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, in their outings, whether it be camping, church, or family gatherings. Her compassionate heart was the biggest part of her, and she never hesitated to make those around her feel loved with phone calls, baked goods, or a handwritten card.

One of the greatest joys in her life was getting together for Sunday lunches and holidays with her family, who travelled to her house from all over the country. Betty loved to cook enough for a battalion, making sure no one left hungry and with all of the leftovers they could carry. Her specialty was strawberry ice cream cake, pink icing and all, topped with "magic candles" expected to be blown out despite your age, accompanied by the most glorious rendition of "Happy Birthday" Morrow County had and will ever hear.

Betty was a lifelong member of Williamsport United Methodist Church, The Red Hat Club, The Democratic Committee of Morrow County, The Rural Mothers' Club, and The Frozen Hill Mothers' Club. She was proud to serve as a poll worker in Morrow County every year for over 50 years. Bob and Betty also owned the R.N. Sautter Motorist Mutual Insurance Agency where Betty was a licensed life insurance agent. After retirement, they enjoyed travelling both in the states and abroad, collecting teaspoons and thimbles along the way. One of their most notable trips was to the American Cemetery in Normandy, France with Loren and Louise Coldwell in 1989.

Surviving Betty are her four children Doris (Dan) Coldwell of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, John (Vanessa) Chapman of Lebanon, Ohio, Arlen (Sharon) Chapman of Nashua, New Hampshire, and Alice (Dave) Willeke of Lexington, Ohio; ten grandchildren, Rachel (Lucas) Bauman, Luke Coldwell (Larry Hayman), Jessica (Rick) Southard, Lindsey (Aaron) Shaffer, Amanda (Nick) Eckert, Allison Chapman, Matthew (Ashley) Chapman, Meghan Willeke, Mitch Willeke, and Mason (Brooke) Willeke. Additionally, she is survived by nine great-grandchildren: Savannah and Gwendolyn Bauman, Kimber, Colt, and Parker Southard, Dominic and Aria Eckert, and Lilly and Bella Bauman. Also surviving Betty are two sisters- Avalene Barrick and Barbara Detwiler- and one sister- in-law- Eloise Sautter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Chapman, son Leslie, daughter Janice, and two brothers- Richard and Donald Sautter.

We would like to thank Morrow Manor Nursing Home for their genuine love and care for Betty in the last years of her life, as well as Hospice of Morrow County for their sensitive treatment in her end-of-life care.

Calling hours will be held at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mt. Gilead on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, from 1 – 3 p.m. Services to honor and celebrate her life will begin at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Jack Kegley officiating. Graveside services will follow at Bryn Zion Cemetery in Mt. Gilead.
