Sam Newt Wilson, self-made businessman and entrepreneur, whose professional and philanthropic efforts changed the lives of many, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2021 at age 85 in Dallas, TX. Born in Ennis, Texas, on September 1, 1935, Sam strived for success even at an early age. Throughout his childhood, he overcame hardship and obstacles, and developed unparalleled strength and drive that directly translated into his career later in life. His confidence and charm helped him win over Beverly, and on January 31, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life. They celebrated 63 years of marriage one day prior to his passing. Early in his career, Sam was motivated to make a difference in the world. He served in various managerial capacities with Texas Instruments, Inc. for over 17 years, including opening the first Texas Instruments plant in Japan, and then served as Vice President of Circle Airfreight Corporation. Sam helped revolutionize the shipping industry in the United States and overseas. In 1978, Sam purchased Texas Crating. He co-founded Intertrans Corporation in 1981, a publicly-traded international freight forwarding company. Sam served as both Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, taking the company public in 1984. In May 1995, Intertrans merged with Fritz Companies, which was later acquired by UPS. In retirement, Sam continued to help the greater Dallas community. As a two-time cancer survivor, Sam hosted Cattle Baron's Ball, the largest single-night fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, at his ranch in 2001 and 2002. In addition to his contributions to cancer research, he also believed in the importance of increasing access to high-quality education, and contributed to this goal through his education-focused philanthropic giving. During his later years of life, Sam's ranch in Flower Mound, Texas became his pride and joy. He welcomed everyone-both family and strangers alike-to his ranch with open doors and a firm handshake. He loved that his ranch, Shady Oaks, could be seen from the sky, known for its lake with a longhorn-shaped island. His family knows he is looking down on his ranch with a proud smile. Sam is survived by his wife Beverly; his two children and their spouses, Sam, Jr. and Carol Wilson of Dallas, TX, and Diane Bradshaw and Rob Womack of Manhattan Beach, CA; and his grandchildren Jennifer, Sam III, Maddie, and Margot. A private graveside service was held on February 4, 2021 at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
