Doris J. Burkhead, 79, of 302 East Andrews St., Monroe, died at 4:45 p.m. Sunday, Nov.9, 2003, at Adams County Hospital in Decatur. She served for 24 years as clerk-treasurer for the town of Monroe and was retired as Adams Central Middle School secretary, a position she held for 21 years.
She was born Sept. 28, 1924, in Huntington County to Oka M. and Stella Lockwood Gaiser. Her marriage was on Oct. 24, 1943, to Loren C. Burkhead, who preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 1994.Mrs. Burkhead was a member of the Monroe United MethodistChurch, the United Methodist Women and the Builders Sunday School Class.
Surviving, in addition to the Bluffton brother, are one daughter, Mrs. Gary (Lisa) Cottingham of Indianapolis; another brother, Noel Gaiser of Bradford, Vermont; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Crystal) Lee of Tucson, Arizona, and Mrs. Paul (Marilyn) Miller of San Clemente, Calif., and two grandchildren. A sister, Dorothy Beitleshees, preceded her in death.
Calling will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Haggard & Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur, and at the church for one hour before the service Friday. The funeral service Friday will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Monroe United Methodist Church with Rev. Phil Lutz and Rev. Don Wilks officiating.
