Loren C. Burkhead, 74, Monroe, a longtime Republican member of Monroe Town Council, died of a heart attack at 1:27 a.m. Monday in Adams County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on August 6, 1920 in Adams County to Loren C. and Stella Boxley Burkhead and married Doris J. Gaiser on October 24, 1942. Mrs. Burkhead is Monroe Clerk-Treasurer.
He retired in 1982 and a 20-year career at Berne's CTS plant and was also Monroe Township Assessor and a member of the Ray Cemetery Board. He was a member of Monroe United Methodist Church and was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps.
Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Gary (Lisa) Cottingham, Indianapolis; four sisters, Virginia Burkhead, Berne; Drusilla Hartman, Petaluma, California; Margaret Maddock, Warren, Indiana and Mrs. Douglas (Wanda) McFall, Carmi, Illinois; and two grandchildren. A brother, Jack Burkhead, and a sister, Audrey Portia, are deceased.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Monroe United Methodist Church, with burial in Ray Cemetery, west of Monroe.
Visiting hours will be from 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the church's Fellowship Hall and from 10-11 a.m. Thursday in the church. Preferred memorials are to the church.
Funeral and burial arrangements are by Haggard and Armes Funeral Home, Decatur.

LOREN C. BURKHEAD, 74, of Monroe died yesterday in Adams County Memorial Hospital. The Adams County native retired in 1982 from CTS in Berne after 20 years, and was a former member of the Monroe Town and Ray Cemetery boards, and a Monroe Township assessor. Surviving are his wife, Doris J.; a daughter, Lisa Cottingham of Indianapolis; sisters, Virginia Burkhead of Berne, Drusilla Hartman of Petaluma, Calif., Margaret Maddock of Warren and Wanda McFall of Carmi, Ill.; and two grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Monroe United Methodist Church, where calling is 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow, and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be Ray Cemetery. Arrangements are by Haggard & Armes Funeral Home, Decatur. Preferred memorials are gifts to the church.
