Harry was spotted playing for Tunbridge Wells Rangers against Chelsea reserves and signed in April 1912. A versatile player who was prepared to turn out in any position , on one occasion even playing the role of deputy goalkeeper. This despite only measuring 5ft 11ins.

During his Chelsea career which spanned 12 seasons , he appeared mostly on the right wing, in which position he played in the 1915 FA Cup Final.

During WW1, in February 1916, 18 months after the outbreak of the First World War, Harry joined the Royal Flying Corps and trained as a rigger. He held the rank of air mechanic and was discharged in March 1919.
