Alma Edith Wilson was the daughter of Creed Wilson (1865-1943) and Viola Anna Peck (1868-1935), who were not married. Her middle name was Edith, but often she and her family members used her biological father's name, Creed, as her middle name, as well as his last name Wilson. Alma's sister, Inez Mae Wilson Baker (1892-1953), was also a daughter of Creed Wilson and Viola Anna Peck. Her mother later married Hiram Jack, and sometimes she is incorrectly identified as Alma Jack.

Alma was first married to Lawrence Frederick Horner (1882-1909) in 1906, who died in 1909. She then married Floran Albert Neighbors (1887-1942) on 15 Apr 1911. Both Floran and Alma were deaf since childhood and they had met when attending the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind in Romney, WV, in the late 1890's.
