Thomas, the son of Jack Pennington and Thelma L. Pennington of Scott City MO enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 10, 1967. He arrived in Vietnam on October 2, 1967 and was assigned for duty with Company M, 3d Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF. In the early morning hours of January 27 an NVA force infiltrated into the Battalions area in Cam Lo District of Quang Tri Province and surrounded Co M's position. The enemy assaulted the Marines, artillery and mortar fire was brought to bear on the enemy during the assault and additional reaction forces were dispatched to reinforce the Marines under attack. During the four hour engagement twenty Marines were killed in action, one of the casualties was PFC Pennington who died as a result of hostile rifle fire. PFC Pennington`s Grave Marker indicates he was with Co M, 3d Bn, 5th Mar, the unit designation was made because of an error in this Casualty Report. His Service record indicates he was with Com M, 3d Bn, 4th Mar.
