'Kit' as everyone knew her was a single mother of 5 children. Growing up on a farm & later in town during the depression taught resourcefulness. Grundy Center, Iowa was a small town but it was home until a friend encouraged her to come to Texas. She worked for the railroad in Texas City escaping death when a barge blew up in & around the chemical plants killing many. Married her first husband & later went home to have their son, John. She went back to work in Texas when that marriage failed trying to support herself and son. She married again and had 4 additional children with her second husband. She moved to Amarillo, TX in 1950 to be close to her parents who moved from Iowa to help rebuild Amarillo after a major tornado. She worked hard. Enrolled in college hoping to become an architect. Some restrictive educational requirements kept her from finishing her degree. But she made extra money as a draftsman working on blueprints for new homes. She knew carpentry, could rewire lights, change the oil in her car. And redesigned the inside of her first purchased home with the help of her carpenter dad. With her children grown she moved to Dallas went back to college for a while and worked for Trinity Insurance which later became Unum until forced to retire at age 82. She was rarely seen without a book to read. Loved her coffee. Loved jokes. Loved her brothers. And loved football.
