Mitchel “Red” Griffith, age 83, of Newport, Kentucky, passed away on February 9, 2021, at Saint Elizabeth Healthcare, in Florence, Kentucky. He was born in Breathitt County, Kentucky, on November 24, 1937. He was a people person, who enjoyed telling stories. He never failed to put a smile on the next person’s face. He lived a long life of great wisdom, and he passed that wisdom down to his kids and grandchildren. Mitchel was known as “Poo-paw” by his grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He retired from TANK, where he had worked since 1974. He was also a member of Trinity Lodge #163, Scottish Rites and York Rites. Mitchel owned a diner, Country Inn, in Newport, Kentucky, before passing it down to his children, Dennis and Lana.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Mitchel Griffith, Sr., and Grace Bush Griffith; his wife, Mary Cole Griffith; his first wife, Betty King Griffith; a son, Dennis Griffith; a daughter, Patricia Turner; two brothers, Rufus Griffith and Joseph Chester Griffith; and two sisters, Mary Howard and Bobbi Haddix. He is survived by: a son, Ronnie (Linda) Griffith; two daughters, Lana (Steve Ard) Griffith and Kim (Jess) Turner; a sister, Nancy (Howard) Becker; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, at Cooper Funeral Home. Masonic service will begin at 7:30 p.m., and the funeral service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Griffith Cemetery, in Breathitt County, Kentucky.
