Mary Elizabeth Jensen, 87, of Hinckley, IL, passed away peacefully Friday, February 5, 2021 at Willowcrest Nursing Pavilion in Sandwich, IL. She was born August 8, 1933 in Mosheim, Tennessee the daughter of Alex and Beulah (Ellenburg) Honeycutt. She married James A. Jensen on December 15, 1951, in DeKalb, IL. She was a member of Hinckley First United Methodist Church in Hinckley, IL.

She is survived by her daughter Becky (Howard) Rosenwinkel of Plano, IL; two granddaughters, Laura (Keith) Keigher of Sandwich, IL, and Sarah (Scott) McKinney of Arlington Heights, IL; two great granddaughters, Claire and Cora Keigher; two sisters, Sidney Edgar of Sugar Grove, IL, and Fran (John) Vermillion of Dayton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Beulah Honeycutt; her husband, James Jensen; three sisters; and eight brothers.

Mary loved people through food. It was the way she served others. Rarely did anyone leave her home without a generous portion of something delicious. In her well-stocked strawberry-themed kitchen, she was constantly baking and cooking for family, friends, neighbors and fellow church members.

She enjoyed reading recipe books, testing recipes and adjusting them to her liking. She was always resourcefully preparing food ahead, whether that be brewing a spare container of sun tea on her porch or freezing an entire season's worth of sweet corn or strawberries to enjoy throughout the winter.

In her earlier years, she enjoyed tending to her elaborate garden and sharing her harvest with others. She could grow anything and loved watching it grow. Her grandchildren have fond memories of her grapevines and carrots. In the winter months she enjoyed getting her seed catalogs and planning ahead for her garden. She always looked forward to the first robins arriving as a sign of spring and would call for Becky as soon as she spotted one.

She loved visiting with her friends, and in her later years, enjoyed phone visits with them.

Private Graveside service was held at Greenwood Cemetery in Hinckley, IL. Memorials can be made to the food pantry of your choice in Mary's name or as Mary so often did, reach out to someone and deliver them a meal in her memory. Arrangements were entrusted to Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk, IL. For more information or to sign our guestbook please go to www.eighnerfuneralhomes.com.
