U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Auburn Theological Seminary in 1847, was ordained a Presbyterian minister and was a clergyman at the Congregational Church of New York City. Moving to Iowa, in 1854, he founded the town of Grinnell, also the Grinnell University and was a member of the Iowa State Senate, (1856-60). He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1858, practiced law in Grinnell and was special agent for the Post Office Department, (1862-63). In 1863, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth and Thirty-ninth Congresses, serving until 1867. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was he president of the State Horticultural Society and resumed the practice of law until his death from throat disease at age 69.
