Born on Sept. 15, 1923, in Kaufman County, Texas, to William H. and Ida Francis Brewer Woods, she died on Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at the local hospital. She and Willard Burton were married on Aug. 17, 1946, in Cooke County, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 11, 2004; her parents; six brothers; three sisters; a great-granddaughter, Chelsea Hughes; and granddaughter-in-law, Holli Hughes.
A resident of Love County since 1960, she was a seamstress employed by Marietta Sportswear for 20 years. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.
Emma enjoyed gardening, especially tending her flowers, and quilting.
She also loved animals. She especially loved her grandchildren, and she was famous for her biscuits and gravy.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Lana Burton, Lone Grove; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Charlie Hughes, Marietta, Mildred Burton, Kingston, and Georgia and Roy Wade, Thackerville; a brother, Junior Woods, Andrews, Texas; two sisters, Pearl Cain, Odessa, Texas, and "Dimple" Franklin, Andrews, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Bearers will be Vernon Hughes, Clayton Hughes, Chris Jones, Johnny Wade, Brian Liddell, John Marshall, Wade Gratz and Brandon Cottrell. Honorary bearers are granddaughters, Charlotte Williams, Teresa Liddell, Addie Gratz, Mandy Marshall, Kimberly Wright, Melody Sisson, Laura Cottrell and Jeri McCage.
