Cheri L. Hoffman, 69, passed away peacefully at home Monday, December 28, 2020, after a brave battle with lung cancer.
She was born April 24, 1951, in Maddock, North Dakota, to Agnes and Leo Halvorson. Raised on a farm outside of Esmond, North Dakota, she told many stories about her childhood experiences with her siblings and their time on the farm. When she was 16, she met John. They dated for a year and were married in December 1968 and welcomed their first-born, Mick in April 1969. They moved to San Francisco, California, when John joined the Army and went to Vietnam as a medic.
Shortly thereafter, they returned to North Dakota where their second born son, Jamie was born. They left North Dakota in 1972 and went to the West Coast and landed in West Linn, Oregon. Cheri spent most of her time with her family. Family was the most important thing to her. There was never an event, no matter where the location was that she missed. She enjoyed watching plays, steel drum concerts, basketball, volleyball and soccer games for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Cheri hosted major holidays at her home and it was a time for the whole family to gather and be together to celebrate life and the love that everyone shared. She spent her evenings cheering on the Portland Trail Blazers. She was a lover of genealogy and family history.
For the last 10 years, she was a volunteer victims advocate at the Children’s Justice Center in Vancouver, Washington. This was a position she was passionate about. She helped many families navigate difficult situations and gave them unwavering support. Cheri found this work of the utmost importance and prioritized it day and night to make sure people were cared for.
Cheri was a warrior. She was tough and hardheaded but gentle and charismatic. How people felt around her was a feeling that never leaves you. She was a dreamer and always wanted the very best for everyone and to better any situation she came into with her work and her family.
She was the ultimate forgiver; she believed in redemption and second chances. Cheri was and will always be the glue, the peacemaker, the soul of our family. To anyone who knew her, had a conversation with her, or had the privilege to be in her presence was truly blessed by the beautiful person she was. The lessons taught, the recipes given, the love shared will lie in the hearts of us all forever.
Cheri was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, John Hoffman and father Leo Halvorson. She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-law, Jamie Hoffman, Mick Hoffman, and Tammi Hoffman; four grandchildren, Kirsten and Robb Talbott, Tyler and Madison Hoffman, Kyle Hoffman, and Alison Hoffman; two great-grandchildren, Oliver and Lucy; mother, Agnes Halvorson; eight brothers and sisters, Linda Hoffman, Lyle Halvorson, Patti Moore, Alan Halvorson, Lori Schileve, Shirley Lafleur, Gary Halvorson, and Donna Hubbard; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of life took place April 24, 2021 at New Height Church in Vancouver, Washington on what would have been her 70th birthday.
