Ernie F. Alvarez originally of Lordsburg, New Mexico passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2021, from respiratory complications caused by COVID-19. He was 62 years young.

Ernie was born on June 1, 1958, to father Antonio and mother Evangelina Alvarez. He was the seventh of nine children. In high school, Ernie was a big man on campus. He was not only known for his athletic ability – especially in football – but also notoriously known for his shenanigans along with anyone of his boys from back in the day - Danny “Boy” Gomez, John Ashley, Marty Rosales, Benny Ramon, Ronny Razo, Mico Alvarado, Jon-Michael “Mooney” Morales and Frankie Flores to name a few.

In 1977, Ernie married his High School sweetheart, the former Juanita Martinez, and the two had three children: Michael, Julie and Patrisha. At 21 years of age, the young family relocated to California in 1979 where his family grew to include: two sons-in-law, David Bakalar, husband of Julie, and Fabian Heredia, husband of Patrisha; and eight grandchildren: Alexis, David, Anthony, Isabella, Ryan, Genevieve, Jason and Brooklyn.

Ernie’s greatest passions in life were family and food. He loved to be surrounded with family and even friends, joking around and teasing. Hand in hand, he loved to share his food creations with all of them. Ernie was an avid grill master, smoke master, and good ol’ chef in the kitchen where he and Juanita had their own cooking competitions – the real winners were the taste-testers, his family. Without exception, Ernie was a content man with a heart for people. He was known to go the extra mile for someone and would not hesitate to give the shirt off his back if necessary. Above all else, Ernie was a man of faith in Christ who had compassion and heart of prayer for all he knew.

Ernie is survived by his wife; his children; his grandchildren; his sister-in-law Helen Alvarez; his siblings Alice Sanchez, Rachel Martin, Lupe Efaw, Benny Alvarez, Jaime Alvarez, Sally Guzman, Pauline Gomez, their spouses and all his beloved nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by both his parents, and eldest brother, Tony Alvarez.

All funeral services will be held in Lordsburg, New Mexico on Saturday, February 13, 2021. A visitation and viewing will start at 9 AM, with the funeral service to follow at 10 AM. The family will be there to welcome friends and relatives. Location will be at Lordsburg Calvary, 301 East 5th Street, Lordsburg, NM 88045. Graveside service will be at Mountain View Cemetery immediately following the funeral service.
