Elmer Lee Baker, 92, of Lexington, KY, passed away on January 27, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family.

Lee was born August 10, 1928 in Corbin, KY. He was the son of the late Elmer L. Baker and Daisy Young Baker. He attended Corbin High School, served in the United States Navy from 1946-1948, graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree and later returned to the University of Kentucky College of Law and graduated in 1991 with a Juris Doctor degree.

In addition to his parents, Lee was preceded in death by his loving wife of 43 years, Phyllis Jean Ewen Baker; his two sisters, Mary Lou Baker Henjum, Jo Ann Baker Isham; and his brother-in-law, Paul Henjum, all of Oak Ridge, TN.

Lee began his career in Fairfield, Alabama in 1952 as a Practice Engineer with U.S. Steel Mining Company. His time with the Company took him to Lynch, KY as Chief Inspector, on to Uniontown, PA as Assistant General Superintendent and later General Superintendent, and then to Pittsburgh, PA where he was the General Manager of Coal Development, Director of Coal Development and Director of Engineering and Development. He retired from U.S. Steel in 1986. Lee and his family then moved to Lexington, KY where he worked as Vice President of Operations for Island Creek Corporation from 1986-1988.

Lee was an avid University of Kentucky basketball and football fan. He enjoyed playing bridge, playing golf with his sons and his friends, and most of all – spending time with his family. Lee was a long-time member of Spring Valley Golf Club and Southern Hills United Methodist Church in Lexington, KY.

Lee is survived by his four children, Debbie Baker, Lynn Baker Kennedy, Alan (Vicki) Baker, and Mark Baker; his grandchildren Ryan (Heather) Tomi, Lee Ann Kennedy (Jon) Young, Allison Kennedy (Taylor) Warren; his two great-grandchildren, Elijah Warren and Jackson Warren and his brother-in-law, Ed Isham of Harriman, TN. He also leaves behind his dear friend, Joan Black of Corbin.

There will be a private graveside service for the family in the Lexington Cemetery with the Reverend Dennis Burrows officiating.
