Roy Gaylord Solomon was born August 25, 1944 in Waldron, Arkansas, to Roy Samuel Solomon and Muriel Davis Solomon. He graduated from Waldron High School and then graduated from Ouachita Baptist University.

After college, Gaylord taught and coached in Hope and Wynne, Arkansas. Gaylord and his family moved to El Dorado, Arkansas in 1976 where he became a partner of United Insurance Agency, during which time he became one of Arkansas’s first Certified Insurance Counselors. Upon his retirement he resided in both El Dorado and Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Gaylord had a lifetime love of sports, but, his primary passion was football. In high school, Gaylord made all-conference team. At Ouachita Baptist University, he played baseball and football, earning all conference his junior and senior seasons.

After coaching, his love for the game evolved to officiating high school football and eventually college football. During that time, he mentored many new officials and helped them get assigned to crews. He also coached at the El Dorado Boys & Girls Club. All that knew him, knew where to find him on a Saturday, watching as many games as he possibly could. Gaylord’s other passions were deer hunting, fishing, and reading.

Gaylord served 21 years as a board member of the El Dorado Boys and Girls Club. He also served on many other boards; President of the Arkansas Boys and Girls Club Area Council, President of the South Arkansas Razorback Club, El Dorado Chamber of Commerce, Independent Insurance Agency of Arkansas, Arkansas State Storage Tanks Committee, lifetime member of the Arkansas Officials Association.

Most importantly, Gaylord was a committed family man and loved by so many that survive him: his wife, Mary Eleanor Solomon of El Dorado; his sister and brother-in-law Gary and Becky Braswell of Lavaca, AR; his daughter, Amanda Read Solomon of Hot Springs; his son and daughter-in-law Richard and Ashley Solomon of Fayetteville, and his step-son, Adam Faulkner of El Dorado. Gaylord is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, several nieces, and nephews. Gaylord was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Muriel Solomon of Waldron, his sister Joyce McMurchie of El Dorado, his half-brother Edwin Solomon of Fort Smith and 1 great grandchild.

There will be a memorial service in his honor at Young’s Funeral Directors, at 2 pm, Thursday, February 11, 2021 with Bro. Gary Braswell officiating. A visitation is scheduled an hour prior to the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gaylord’s honor at either the El Dorado Boys and Girls Club or Lifetouch Hospice of El Dorado.
