The youngest of five children, Bob graduated with the class of 1965 from Morgantown High School. After graduation, he proudly served in the United States Army, where he was a vehicle mechanic, also earning the National Defense Award for rifle marksmanship. Bob’s love for his country continued thru out his lifetime.
Later in life, Bob was set up on a blind date where met the love of his life and best friend, Mary. Upon meeting, the two knew they had met each other’s soul mate, and were united in marriage on August 23, 1980. Settling into life in Owen County, the newly married couple raised two beautiful children while Bob supported the family by farming, later driving a truck and deservingly retiring from Kuntzman Trucking. The Sampson’s moved back to Martinsville when the kids were grown and have remained there to this day.
An avid basketball fan, Bob took great pleasure watching high school games. He enjoyed racing sprint cars with his brother, also racing go karts with his son. Knowledgeable about antique tractors, he was known to fix tractors for friends and restored a Farmall H for his daughter. A masterful storyteller, Bob told tales of years gone by, frequently making others laugh. Above all, he was a dedicated and loyal family man. He loved his family with his whole heart and will be forever missed.
Bob leaves behind his loving wife, Mary Ann (Crone) Sampson, of Martinsville; two children, David Sampson of Monrovia; Alice Kilbride (husband, Matt) of Bloomington, and two grandchildren, Delilah, and Oliver Kilbride; siblings, Maybelle Muir of Martinsville, James “Jimmy” Sampson (wife, Doris) of Albany, KY, Marilyn Pearce of Martinsville, Charles “Butch” Sampson (wife, Rosemary) of Martinsville; several nieces and nephews; along with several great nieces and nephews.
