Columbia - Annette McClain Sanders, 83, died on January 24, 2021, after a lengthy illness. Born in Sumter County, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Vernal Benjamin and Edna Drayton McClain. Annette graduated in 1955 from Dreher High School. She held both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of South Carolina. She then began an academic journey as a teacher of Latin and Language Arts. Her passion was her students of Latin. Annette became chairperson of the South Carolina Junior Classical League in which her students won many honors and accolades throughout her long career. She served schools in Richland District One and Lexington Districts One and Two. She was a member of many educational and language arts organizations. Annette was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Lamplighters Sunday School Class. Mrs. Sanders is survived by her husband of 63 years, Andrew Dick Sanders, and her son, James Andrew "Jamie" Sanders, and his wife, Suzanne Henson Sanders. At the family's request, there will be no service or visitation. Memorials may be made to Ashland United Methodist Church or a charity of one's choice. Burial was at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
