John Preston Atkins, 50, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, at his home.

A 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2021, at The Refuge with Reverend Kenneth Terry, Minister Ken Church and Associate Pastor Larry Ziglar officiating. Burial will follow at Mayodan Municipal Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. He will lie in state at Ray Funeral Home from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 2021. Funeral home pandemic guidelines will apply.

A Rockingham County native, John was born on November 29, 1970, to the late Herbert Atkins and Carolyn Snow Atkins. John was the Pastor at The Refuge Church, something that was everything to him. He was a die hard Tarheel fan that had tickets for all games; was also a fan of the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Redskins. He was an advocate and supporter of Teen Challenge and Jericho House. John was a true leader in the Community and will be missed by many.

John is survived by his mother, Carolyn Snow Atkins; his wife Jerri Campbell Atkins of the home; children, John Anderson (Kaitlyn) and Tyler McCoy, both of Greensboro and Brandi McCoy of the home; brother, Jason Atkins of Greensboro and sister, Michelle Tuttle (Richard) of Virginia.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Rockingham County for their care and support of John.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Refuge, 213 S. 2nd Avenue, Mayodan, NC 27027.
