Ava Gray-Martin, 88, of the Lumberton Health and Rehabilitation Community passed away February 5, 2021.

She was born June 20, 1932 in Robeson County, NC.

Ava was a faithful member of East Lumberton Baptist Church where she was active in the Joy Bells Sunday School.

She was a nursing assistant at the Pilgrim State Hospital in Long Island, NY, before becoming a nursing assistant at the office of Dr. Hugh McAlister. Later in life she worked with the Tiny Tots at Bill Sapp Center until retirement.

Ava was preceded in death by her husband, Howard T. Martin; a daughter-in-law, Allison Leggett Martin; a grandson, Cole Martin; her parents, Abner Meares and Cora Baxley-Meares; and her siblings, Cecil Meares and Joyce Meares.

She is survived by her children: Stephen Howard Martin, Michael Alan Martin (Joy), Thrower Martin, Larry J. “PaPa” Martin, and “Kathy” M. Houser (Rick L.); a brother, Billy Meares; her grandchildren, Amanda M. Forester (Randy), Cobey L. Houser (Rachel), and Cassie M. Martin (Rubin); her great grandchildren, Drake Forester, Michelle Martin, Dallas M. Houser, Hayzlie Gray, and Brystal Gray Houser; her great-great grandchildren, Scarlet Hope Houser and Christian Howard Houser; a special niece, Cindy Paul-Jolly; a special friend, Catherine Floyd; other relatives: Norman Meares (Sally), Ray Branch (Norma), Jeffrey Halliburton, and Joe Bracey Freeman.

The funeral services will be conducted in the chapel of Boles Biggs Funeral Home, with Rev, Tim Tyner, officiating. The internment services will be held in Gardens of Faith Cemetery under the direction of Boles-Biggs Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 5171 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27612.
