Obituary for Joyce Ann Holmes
Joyce Ann Holmes, 85, died peacefully at Evelyn's House in St. Louis, Missouri on February 5, 2021. Joyce was born on August 7, 1935, in Dupo, Illinois. to Edward and Nellie "Babe" Marlen. Joyce attended and graduated from Dupo High School, prior to graduating with a Degree in Education from SIU- Carbondale, Illinois.
During her teaching career Joyce taught kindergarten and first grade in Shiloh Public schools and Fairmont City Parochial schools where she enriched the lives of hundreds of children. Joyce was a member of and enjoyed attending service at the First Baptist Church of Columbia. She also enjoyed gardening, photography and scrapbooking. She enjoyed shopping and going out to lunch with friends and spent hours watching her grandchildren star in sporting events. Above all, Joyce was a dedicated Mom who loved her sons dearly.
Joyce is survived by her 4 sons Don Holmes (Elizabeth), Darius Holmes (Kimberly), Derek Holmes (Angela), David Holmes (Tracey) 10 grandchildren, her sisters Dolores Marie (Marlen) Koblitz, Della Imogene (Marlen) Groce and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Preceding her in death are parents Edward and Nellie "Babe" Marlen, brothers Eddie Grover Marlen, and Vernon Scott Marlen
A Private Ceremony will be held on February 21, 2021, at Dupo Baptist Church. Joyce will be laid to rest at Valhalla Cemetery in Belleville, Illinois.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be directed to the American Heart Association.
Arrangements were handled by Leesman Funeral Home - Dupo, Illinois.
Joyce was cremated and her ashes were buried by her parents.
