BLACK RIVER - Melvin J. McLaughlin, age 73 of Cheboygan passed away Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 at his home on Black River. He was born Feb. 24, 1935 in Cheboygan to Charles H. And Marion (Rose) McLaughlin. Melvin served in the U.S. Navy and also in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed at Proctor & Gamble Paper Company for 39 years as a mechanic and later as an electrician from 1957 to 1990 and subsequently worked for the Great lakes Tissue Company until his retirement in 1996. He enjoyed the outdoors and especially loved watching and feeding the birds and wild animals that visited his home on the river. He also enjoyed spending time at the casino in St. Ignace with his son Tim, where he could visit with everyone.

Survivors include his three children, Timothy of Cheboygan, James of Cheboygan and Wendy Price of North Carolina; six grandchildren, Randy and Dustin McLaughlin of Cheboygan, Lindsay, Logan and Lily Price of North Carolina and Timothy Charles McLaughlin Jr., currently serving in Iraq; two brothers, Howard of Cheboygan and John of North Carolina; and four sisters, Helen Simpson of Cheboygan, Sandy Phillips of Cheboygan, Sharon Patillo of Conroe, Texas and Charlene Rohrer of Portage, Wis. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Violet Baij.

As per Melvin's wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Melvin's name may be directed to the Hospice House, the Cheboygan County Humane Society or the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are being handled by the Nordman Funeral Home of Cheboygan. Published in the Cheboygan Daily Tribune, September 15, 2008.
