Ellen was born on October 24, 1938 in Brunswick, GA. to the late Fennell A. Alexander II & Eunice Louise Alexander. Predeceased by her loving husband of 37 years Joseph Marshall Sr.
She received her BA in Education at Bennett College in Greensboro, NC in 1960 and taught elementary thru grade seven at Sand Everywhere School & Arsenal before retiring in the late 8o's. One of Ellen's important accomplishments was helping to implement Lyndon Johnson's "Model Cities Program for early childhood development," which was one of the first anti-poverty programs in the country through education and other programs. She also played interracial part in several women's groups as she was passionate on making a difference.
She was a dedicated and loving wife, daughter, mother, sister, aunt, friend, grandmother, and educator. She loved dancing and laughing with her close lifelong friends, Shirley Pullum, and Jeannette Sanderson. Ellen was a talented vocalist with an operatic voice. She had a close spiritual relationship with God and shared her joy and gift by singing for years in the choir at Union Baptist Church Choir. After a stroke took her mobility in the 1980s, she still sang in the choir for years. Ellen is survived by her children Joseph Jr. (Serena), Jermaine, Jonathan, Julie-Anne Lewis (Kevin) and nine grandchildren. She leaves behind 5 sisters, her dedicated sister Alice, Rose Engram, Joann, Betty Jean Wilburn (Roy) Vernadette, 6 brothers, Joe (Rhonda), Ronnie, Warren, Vernel, Donnie, Julius (Jackie). She also leaves her Aunt Jessie, Uncle John (Fl) and brothers Fennell A. III and Dennis who predeceased her. She will be missed by 43 nieces and nephews, many cousins and friends in CT, NY, DC, MD, CA, AL, GA, FL, and SC. The family would like to thank all who have helped throughout the years and the aides that assisted and brought her joy Valrie, Claudia, and Leonie. Calling hours will be Saturday, February 6th, at 11 a.m. with A Celebration of Life service to be held at 12 Noon at Union Baptist Church, 1921 Main St, Hartford, CT 06120. Services will be live streamed at (LINK) and at Union Baptist Church - Youtube.. Interment will take place on Wednesday, February 10th, at 10:00 am, at State Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Ln, Middletown, CT 06457 CT.
