Death of George Babcock
Passed Away At the Advanced Age Of 87 Years
His entire life except the first five years passed in this city and it vicinity By Terms of his will the Rome Hospital, will received $3,000.
George Babcock, aged 87, died on Saturday evening at the home of his nephew, John Bates, in Dix. Mr. Babcock was born in Orville, Onondaga County, where his parents died when he was about five years old, and he went to live with an aunt residing there. When ten years old, he removed to Blackman's Corners, in the town of Verona, where he took up his residence with Nathaniel Babcock, an uncle. With the exception of the first five years of his childhood. Mr. Babcock's entire life had been passed in this city and vicinity, conducting a general store in Lowell; he was married to Mrs. Eliza Patterson of that place, whose death occurred here in 1890. No children were born to them. Mr. Babcock came to Rome about 1871 and lived here until he recently went to make his home with his nephew. At one time, Mr. Babcock possessed considerable property, but lost much of it through unfortunate speculation. The only surviving near relatives are seven nephews and nieces: John Bates, Dix: Mrs. E. A. Fitch, Rome: Mrs. Hiram Nostrant, Easu Claire, Mich.: Harlow B., Charles E., John S. and Lester A. Babcock, all residing in Michigan.
It is understood that the Rome Hospital, by the terms of Mr. Babcock's will, is the recipient of$3,000 and also of what remains after small bequests to relative and funeral expenses have been paid.
