ROUND O: Mr. Harper Lewell Gruber, husband of the late Serena Rhode Gruber, passed away Sunday at the Veterans Victory House. He was 91.

Mr. Gruber was born in Branchville, SC September 2, 1924 a son of the late John W. Gruber and Alma Ott Gruber. He was a veteran of WWII, where he served in the Pacific Theater of Operations aboard a navy minesweeper. He was a retired electrical supervisor with SCE&G, where he worked for over twenty-five years, and was an active, lifelong member of the St. Matthews Baptist Church. Mr. Gruber was a farmer, and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his three daughters: Barbara Jean Callaway (Lloyd) of Spartanbug, Becky Hogan of Cottageville, and Carolyn Larson of Sumter. There is one brother, Roland Davis "Dave" Gruber, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his three brothers John, Birnell and Bobby, and by his sons-in-law Bob Hogan and Allen Larson. He also leaves behind his devoted friends and comrades from the Veterans Victory House.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of the Veterans Victory House for the care and support given to Mr. Gruber during his time at the facility.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 in the chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home in Walterboro. Burial services will be held privately, where he will be interred beside his late wife. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Veterans Victory House, or to the St. Matthews Baptist Church.
