Joan Barker Richardson, 83, went home to her Lord and Savior on February 2, 2021. She was surrounded by her family and devoted husband, Ralph Gray Richardson, of 63 years of marriage.
Joan was born in Alamance County and was the daughter of Rufus Leon Barker and Bessie Pryor Barker, both deceased. She was a graduate of Altamahaw-Ossipee School and attended Elon College. She retired from AT&T and UNC Public Safety. Joan also loved working as a part-time teacher and cafeteria aid for years. She was a member of Center United Methodist Church. Joan or “Mawmaw Jo” was known by everyone for the tremendous love of her family and friends. She never met a stranger and if she did, you were her friend after hello. Her hobbies were eating out and shopping.
Joan fought cancer for 2 ½ years although she lived life to the fullest every day. Joan’s entire family, caregiver Tasha and Hospice nurses of Alamance loved and cared for her at home until she passed.
In addition to her husband, Ralph, Joan is survived by her three children, Randy Richardson, wife Sheila, Keith Richardson, wife Naomi, and Lisa Huffman, husband Todd; six grandkids, Amber and Heather, Josh and Brandon, and Cody and Macy; four great grandkids, Cooper and Harper Jo and Cheyanne and Baby Hazel; two step grandkids, Stephanie and Ashley; five step great grandkids, Hayleigh, Mikey and Lucy and Charley and Amelia; her sister, Nell Gordon (her late husband Otis); brother, Pete Barker, his wife Glenda Barker; and deceased brother, Donnie Barker, his surviving wife, Wanda Barker.
The family would like to express their love to all of Joan’s friends and family. She loved you all.
The graveside service is open to everyone on Monday, February 8, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Center United Methodist Church, 9204 Center Church Road, Snow Camp, NC 27349.
Officiating will be Rev. Wendy Bishop and Rev. Gail Smith.
