She was the president of the Women's Auxiliary of the church and was a founder of Delta Sigma Theta Sororit. She was the first president of the Women's Auxiliary of Crownsville State Hospital and found of the Philomathian Club.
She is the daughter of Hamilcar Turley and Ida H. Francis Turley.
She married Carl J Murphy in 1916 in Washington, DC. Carl's family were publishers of the Afro-American newspapers.
They had five daughters:
*Martha Elizabeth Murphy, a journalist, war correspondent, and editor (1917-1998)
*Ida Ann Murphy (1918- )
*Carlita, twin with Vashti (1921- )
*Vashti, twin with Carlita (1921-1981)
