Charles was born on June 8, 1937, to Tecumseh Garrett and Susie Bell Garrett of Cairo, Illinois. He peacefully yielded his spirit on January 29, 2021, in Lompoc, California.

Charles and Marie Taylor met in Chicago, Illinois, and were married on September 12, 1958. They remained faithfully married for 61 years. He leaves to cherish his memories four daughters and one son, Doris Ann Garrett, Belinda Jones, Karen Lee Puckett, Sharon Marie Smith, and Charles Garrett, Jr. He had 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Charles graduated in 1955 and began working as a short order cook for the Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He later joined the United State Air Force on May 15, 1958, and completed training in refrigeration/air-conditioning. Stationed in Arizona, he received orders overseas to Morocco and upon return was sent to Francis E. Warren AFB, Cheyenne, Wyoming. During his tour there, he went TDY for a year to Thailand. He later received orders for Vandenberg AFB, California, where he became Site Manager for his department. He retired as a TSgt on December 1, 1978, for a total of 24 years federal service.

Charles became a member of True Vine West Mission Baptist Church where he rededicated his life and was baptized in 1975. Charles was an active, loyal, and dedicated church member. He was always there helping to set up and clean up. From time to time, he held the office of head usher and on occasion taught Sunday School to the youth. He was a strong witness for Christ and a living example of what a Christian should be. Charles was a blessing to everyone he met and truly was an example of how to walk in the love of God.

Charles made an effort to always be joyful and kept everyone laughing He loved to tell innocent jokes and play around with you. He loved to sing and was one that could always be counted on for help. When it came to the Lord, he was serious and always had a fresh perspective of looking at the Word. It seemed he could tie any subject or situation to God’s Word.

Charles was preceded in death by one brother and one sister, Early Bee Garrett and Roselee Garrett. He is survived by one brother and three sisters, Myron Garrett, Arbell Mathew, Imogene Garrett, and Mary Eanes.

The graveside funeral service will be Thursday, February 4, 2021, at 11 am in the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
