Mary Joan McNamara, née Carey, 87, of Freehold Township, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family.

She was born in Jersey City and had resided in Freehold Township since 1966. Mrs. McNamara was a graduate of The Academy of St. Aloysius, Class of 1951 and Marymount College, Class of 1955.

Mrs. McNamara was a fourth and fifth grade teacher at West Freehold School from 1975 until her retirement in 1996. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Colts Neck, where she was a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. She was a coach in the Freehold Township Softball League, active in Girl Scouts and Indian Guides and a poll worker for the New Jersey Department of State. Nana Mac, as she was affectionally called, was always impeccably dressed and had a fervent penchant for shopping. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and servant of God.

She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Robert A. McNamara; a granddaughter, Mae Rose McNamara; a sister, Eileen Carey McCoy; and her parents, James B. Carey and Nan Dalton Carey Austin. Surviving are her children, Marybeth Connelly and husband Frank, Missy Quinn, Robert McNamara and wife Elaine, Michael McNamara and wife Carolyn, Joan McNamara and husband Patrick Bohen, Maura Holtz and husband Jeff, and James McNamara and wife Nancy; her grandchildren, Kevin and wife Meghan, Caitlin and husband Stefan, Michael, Colleen, Patrick, Meghan and husband Michael, Katie and fiancé Brandon, Erin, Robert, John, Claire, Patrick James, Charlotte, Ella, Maggie, Conor, Reilly, Jimmy, MaryKate, and Molly; her great-grandchildren, Grady, Layton, Beckett, Mara, Michael and Maeve; a sister-in-law, Mary Gibney; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 4 at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center St., Freehold. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 5 at St. Mary's Church, Colts Neck. The interment will be held at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown.
