James, was signed from Luton Town from whom he had mainly played at outside left, in the 1927 close-season, he was converted into a highly successful centre forward. Previously he had also played for Millwall, Coventry City and Clapton Orient.
Having scored 25 goals in 29 games in his first season at Stamford Bridge he was surprisingly dropped from the first team. The following season he came back to notch another 8 goals and then moved to Norwich City.
Appointed Manager of Dartford in 1939. After WW2 he returned to Chelsea to become a highly successful member of Chelsea's scouting staff. Reputedly he was the scout that discovered Jimmy Greaves.
