Joseph W. Novak, 86, of Moscow, died Sunday evening at Regional Hospital of Scranton after an illness. His wife, Cynthia (Resseguie) Novak, died in 2008. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Solosky; and his sister, Gloria Noto.

Born Aug. 7, 1934, in Scranton, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lucille (Muniewski) Novak. Joseph was employed as an inspector with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. He retired as a transportation construction manager in 1997 after 34 years of service. Before his career with the state, he was enlisted in the United States Army, serving overseas in the Charlie Company, 25th Signal Battalion.

Mr. Novak was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was an award-winning artist specializing in wood carving and painting. Friends will remember Joe as a “card shark” who enjoyed playing in poker tournaments, many of which he won.

Surviving him are his children, Lori Kretzer and her husband, Harold, of Kingston, Tenn.; Joseph W. Novak, of Tacoma, Wash.; and John A. Novak and his wife, Amy, of Seattle, Wash. He will be fondly remembered by his six grandchildren, Steven Drakes, Robert Drakes, Elizabeth Novak, Joseph Novak, Jack Novak and Nathan Novak; and his six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his close friend, confidant and former wife, Geraldine Novak.

A Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 220 Church St., Moscow, Pa.

Friends will be received from 10:30 until 11 a.m. at the church.

Interment and military honors will be conducted at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst Twp., Pa.
