Donald was born on August 27, 1940 in Anna, Kentucky to the late Will Simmons and Iva (Glass) Simmons Gross.
Donald worked in the maintenance department at Indiana University for thirty years. He also served in the United States Army. Donald could often be found relaxing with his friends while drinking a cold beer. Donald took great pride in his property and always found joy in beautifying his lawn. Donald loved to travel and explore new places with his late wife Carman.
Donald is survived by his two step-daughters, Sandi Stephens of Florida and Betty (Jack) Burne of Brooklyn, New York; his sister, Gloria (Hank) Cantrell of Bowling Green, Kentucky; his brother, Coy (Ann) “Red” “Bud” Simmons of Dixon, Tennessee; 8 grandchildren, 5 boys and 3 girls; 13 great-grandchildren, 7 boys and 6 girls; 10 great-great-grandchildren, 6 boys and 4 girls; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Carman Simmons; his parents, Will and Iva; his sister, Lucille Corum.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Legion Post 103, Marat Shriners, Noble, 32nd Degree Masons, Oakland Chapter 159 Order of the Eastern Star, the Scottish Rite, to a favorite program, or to the greatest need of The Entity.
A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at 12:00 P.M. at Jessen Funeral Home ~ Franklin Chapel with visitation from 10:00 A.M. until the funeral service. Donald will be laid to rest on Monday, February 8, 2021 at West Newton Cemetery in West Newton, Indiana.
