Bobbie Jean Brown had the courage and heart of a lion. Ultimately her bravery came to a peaceful end on January 24, 2021.

She was born Bobbie Jean Baker on July 28, 1940 in Merigold, Mississippi and often reminisced about her very own Grandmother helping bring her into the world as a mid-wife.

Her parents, Thomas Crosby Baker and Ollie Mae Hayes named her Bobbie but called her Barbara.

Following the death of her young mother, Bobbie lived happily with her grandmother and great-grandmother.

She grew a fondness for crafts and sewing and in her Senior Year of Douglas High School was voted Miss Homemaker, despite burning meals at home, and claiming it added “flavor.”

Bobbie then moved to Chicago to live with her father, Tom and where she would soon meet the love of her life, James Brown.

Bobbie and James were married in 1961 and called Chicago home. They were truly inseparable. When you saw James, Bobbie was never far behind. The couple relished their names, made famous by two singer and often joked about it with friends. James adopted the lyric “I feel good” as his own moniker. While she loved telling people she was the original Bobbie Brown.

The two settled into marriage, and remained together for 59 years, and raised three successful children, Kathy Brown, James Brown, Jr., and Sue (Brown) McCann.

The couple was known for helping families in need. Whether it was owning a gas station during the Civil Rights Movement or being the neighborhood nanny, Bobbie and James opened their hearts and home to anyone.

Friends and family would often rely on Bobbie to take care of their children to allow them the opportunity to work outside of the home and be assured their children were well cared for.

The Browns’ were never a family to stay put for long. James’ career landed them in various places across the country from Chicago to Bolingbrook, Illinois to Springfield, Missouri to Englewood, Colorado, to Fort Collins, Colorado to Spring, Texas and then finally back to Chicago. James and Bobbie had great plans to continue that travel into retirement until Bobbie fell ill, but there was James her ever-loving caretaker. He took that job quite seriously, until his death just 7 months ago, in June.

Loved ones that will miss Bobbie include her daughter Kathy, son James and daughter-in-law Michelle; daughter Sue and son-in-law David. Grandchildren Tyler (Sue), Sarah (James), and Eden (Sue).

Bobbie’s sister (Tracy) and two brothers Sonny & Tyrone who preceded her in death.
