Posted Friday, February 5, 2021 6:00 am The Item, Sumter, SC
Brother Abraham Pressley was born on Feb. 19, 1930, in Kingstree, a son of the late John Arthur Pressley and Jettie Myrtle Burgess Pressley. God, in his infinite wisdom, came into our midst on Monday, Feb. 1, 2021, where he exchanged time for eternity at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Abraham was a believer in prayer. He would sing gospel songs on special occasions and especially at the Pressley family reunions. His passions were church, family, friends and football. He was a member of the St. James Male Choir, International Free and Accepted Modern Masons Lodge, the Pride of Sumter, Lodge Number 35. He was a devoted Gamecock fan who attended numerous high school and college football games. He enjoyed working with flowers, for he loved plants and outdoor gardening. He kept the Pinedale neighborhood beautified with gorgeous plants. His home was kept beautiful and was known for the plow mailbox on Albert Spears Drive.

Abraham accepted Christ at an early age and received his spiritual foundation at Saint Mary United Methodist Church, Kingstree, and later joined Saint James United Methodist Church, Sumter. He sang with the male choir and served as a landscaper.

He received his formal education in the Williamsburg County Public School system. From childhood until age 20, he was a farmer. He was employed by Georgia-Pacific for 20 years. Afterwards, he was employed by the Boyle-Brading family for 25 years. He was a self-employed janitor and landscaper also.

Abraham leaves to cherish his memory: two daughters, Mary Deloris Pressley of Santa Rosa, California, and Darlin Pressley of Columbia; three sons, John (Trudi) Pressley of Columbus, Indiana, Darryl (Elizabeth) Pressley of Florence and Kenneth (Patricia) Pressley of Augusta, Georgia; several loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Almeade Joyner of Washington, D.C., and Hager Lee Corbett of Sumter; three sisters-in-law, Willie Ruth Pressley and Dora Pressley, both of Sumter, and Teronal Wilson of Columbia; a brother-in-law, Roger Fowkles of Indian Trail, North Carolina; a multitude of nieces, nephews, other relatives, special friends and devoted neighbors.

Special regards in appreciation to Pastor James L. Kennedy, who went above and beyond the call of neighborly duty.

Abraham especially enjoyed traveling, shopping and conversing with Martha Prince, a favorite friend.

In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting no visitation at the home.

Celebration of life services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Hillside Memorial Park, Dogwood division, 2561 Cains Mill Road, Sumter, with Cheryl G. Johnson, pastor of St. James United Methodist Church, officiating. Abraham will be buried next to his wife.

The procession will leave at 2:20 p.m. from the home.

Services directed by the management and staff of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter.
