Barbara Bradley Westmoreland
July 23, 1935 - January 28, 2021
Gastonia, North Carolina - Mrs. Barbara Ann Bradley was born 85 years ago, July 23rd,1935, in Charlotte, NC. She spent her childhood on Hawthorne Lane in Charlotte, the daughter of the late Margaret and Rudolph Bradley and sister Betty. She graduated from Greensboro College and would embark on careers that included Public educator, Christian educator, organist and choir directing. She would also share her love of music with children by teaching choirs and piano to hundreds of students throughout her life. She loved that work, but nothing would ever be more important to her than the role of being wife, mother and grandmother. She married James Ross Westmoreland on September 6th, 1969 and also married the calling to serve through the United Methodist Church. She loved the church and always cherished her calling through faith as a central part of her life. She became a mother later in life, to Chris (Kristin) and Andy (Ashley). That led her to her greatest calling and favorite job, being "Baba" to Andrew, Abigail, Jay, Cameron, Kendall, Carter and Lincoln, and nieces and nephews. She fought hard through kidney disease to spend as much time as possible with them, and she will always be with them.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed knitting and needlepoint projects, desserts of all varieties and anything involving her grandchildren. She was an exceptional cook for her family with specialties of vegetable soup, roast, cinnamon toast, "crispy" liver mush and chipped beef. She was an avid Facebooker and loved her Duke Blue Devils.
She was especially grateful for the United Methodist congregations of Hawthorne Lane, Dilworth, and Assurance in Charlotte. Memorial in Thomasville. First in Gastonia. Long's Chapel at Lake Junaluska. It is her deepest desire that everybody find what blessed her, God's love through loving people. When her heart stopped beating, it was full.
She took her last breath surrounded by her husband and sons, at Mission Hospital in Asheville on January 28th, 2021. She was grateful for great care given to her by health care heroes and all the encouragement that came from friends. She left this part of her world better than she found it and rose above every challenge with grace and dignity. She died but her story continues.
A memorial service will be held at First UMC, Gastonia at 11am on Thursday February 4th, with Dr. Matthew Burton and Rev. David Christy officiating and Mr. Paul Saik providing the music. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, family will be in the sanctuary with an option to stream for those who want to join virtually. She will be inurned at the columbarium at First UMC Gastonia at a later date. McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia is providing support for the family. In lieu of flowers, please send flowers to a loved one or donate to a charity of your choice.
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)
