MR. THOMAS THOMAS.
The death occurred somewhat sud-
denly on Wednesday morning last
of an old and respected resident of
this district in the person of Mr.
Thomas Thomas, of Last-street,
Beechworth. Mr. Thomas had been
suffering from an affection of the
heart for some considerable time past,
and on Saturday last, his son, Mr. T.
Thomas, of Bungoona, came to Beech-
worth to see his father, and he com-
plaining of not feeling too well sug-
gested that the old gentleman should
spent a few-weeks at his place, know-
that his father always seemed to re-
gain his health and strength after a
few days' sojourn at the farm. On
Monday last, after consultation with
Dr. Skinner, father and son left
Beechworth for Huon Lane, and on
arrival at his son's place Mr. Thomas
had tea and shortly afterwards re-
tired to rest. He rose about 8 a.m.
on Tuesday, and said he felt much
better, and had had a good night's
rest. He ate a hearty breakfast, and
went out in the paddock with one of
his grandsons. Mrs. Thomas called
them for lunch about 11 a.m., and a
few hours later Mr. Thomas, sen.,
said he did not feel very well, and
laid down on the couch. Shortly
after; he told his daughter -in-law he
had the shivers, and she prevailed on
him to go to bed and summoned her
husband. On the latter's arrival he
gave his father a stimulant, after
which he had about three hours'
sleep, and on awakening said he felt
grand, but very weak. The old
gentleman, gradually got weaker, and
passed peacefully away at a quarter
to three o'clock 0n Wednesday morn-
ing, being conscious up to the last
and suffering no pain whatever.
Born at Gwinear, Cornwall, on 5th
June, 1834, the late Mr. Thomas was
78 years of age. He landed in Mel-
bourne in 1853, and shortly after
arrival proceeded to Ballarat. From
thence he came on to this district,
and for some years resided at Yack-
andandah, where he followed mining.
He was married in Yackandandah in
1858, after which he took up land
at Tangambalanga, where husband
and wife resided for a number of
years. About 23 years ago Mr.
Thomas retired, his son Mr. James
Thomas, succeeding to the property at
Tangambalanga. The deceased came
to Beechworth, where he has resided
ever since. Mrs. Thomas died about
22 years ago, since when the wants
of the deceased gentleman have been
attended to by his only daughter.
Some twelve years ago Mr. Thomas
took a trip to his native land (Corn-
wall), accompanied by his sister and
his daughter, and later paid a visit
to London, returning with his daugh-
ter to the land of his adoption. This
trip was of great benefit to Mr. Tho-
mas' health, and he returned quite
rejuvenated. The late Mr. Thomas
leaves two sons (Mr. T. Thomas, of
Bungoona, Huon Lane, and Mr. Jas.
Thomas, of Tangambalanga, Kiewa
and one daughter (Miss Thomas, of
Last-street, Beechworth). The de-
ceased gentleman was a consistent
adherent of the Methodist Church,
aud was one of the most regular at-
tedants at the services on Sundays.
He was of a retiring disposition,
and took no part in public matters.
He was of a cheery disposition, and
was held in high esteem by a large
circle of friends. His remains were
interred beside those of his wife in
the Beechworth cemetery on Friday,
the body being brought from Bun-
goona by Messrs. McDermott and
Hall, undertakers, of Yackandandah.
A large number of friends of the de-
ceased gentleman were present at
the graveside to pay their last tri-
bute of respect, and several handsome
wreaths, were placed on the grave.
The service of the Methodist Church
was impressively read by the Rev.
J. Leslie.
