[Notes from Jerry FREEMAN 31 July 2007]

Nicholas (Nick) Freeman died very suddenly at St. Mary's Hospital in Oshkosh 1915. He had gone there to have a goiter removed and the operation was performed. His heart was very weak, but he seemed to be rallying from shock of the operation nicely, and the doctors and his relatives had high hopes that he would come out all right. About noon, he was taken with a coughing spell and passed away in a few moments. E. F. Spoehr and R. G. Sawyer went down to Oshkosh and returned with the body. The funeral was held at the congregational. The Odd Fellows, which he was a member, had charge of the funeral. The funeral of Nick Freeman was attended by a large number of people. The floral offerings were profound and included some beautiful wreaths from the fraternal to which he belonged. The pallbearers were composed of 3 Masons and the Odd Fellows. After he married, he conducted a store in Shiocton for some time until a fire destroyed the property. After that, he lived on a farm for a year and then returned to the village where he engaged in carpenter business. About 9 years later, when he assumed management of the Shiocton Lumber Yards, which position he held until a year ago when he resigned on account of poor health. He was a man of strict integrity, highly respected by all who knew him, and his circle of friends was extensive. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. of Shiocton and the A.M. of New London. He took great interest in local affairs and had served as town clerk, Village treasurer and on the board of trustees of the village. At the time of his death, he leaves his wife, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters, John and Sidney of the Town of Maine. Mrs. August Spoehr of Shiocton, M.
