The daughter of Samuel Whittington and Lydia Dwire Whittington, Susan was born 3 November 1835 in Hayes County, Nebraska. She married Rufus John Melvin on 23 August 1855 in Bureau County, Illinois. They had five children: Kate A. (1856), Hortis Eugene (1857), Merritt Edgar (1858), Ida May (1862) and Frank A. (1863). Her husband, Rufus, died at age 73 as a results of a stroke at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Kate Cahn, in Chadwick, Illinois.
