Eliza Denny was born in 1808, in Kentucky, to David and Hannah Goff Denny. When she was sixteen she married Leonard Hutton Scott of Virginia. The young people eloped, were forgiven, and given a farm near Chicago, Illinois, where Eliza died in childbirth at the age of thirty-four, leaving six little daughters. A baby son died with her.
She is reputed to be the first person buried in Bachelor's Grove Cemetery.
