She was the daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Melville Dill, a Member of the Colonial Parliament representing the Parish of Devonshire in the Parliament of Bermuda, Attorney General of Bermuda, and Commanding Officer of the Bermuda Militia Artillery. Her mother, Ruth Rapalje (Neilson) Dill, had roots in New Jersey, and was a descendant of American Revolutionary War hero Col. John Neilson, who commanded the New Jersey militia in the northern part of that colony during the American Revolution, served in the New Jersey legislature during and after the Revolution, and was one of the earliest trustees of Rutgers University.
