Richard Clinton Baxter, 92, of Cambridge, MN, passed away peacefully on Fri, Jan 29, 2021 ,at his daughter's home. He was born Jul 6, 1928, in Princeton, MN, to Victor and Hazel (Patten) Baxter. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Joyce on Nov 30, 2010. Richard met Joyce Higginbotham at the Black Cat Café in Kelly Lake, MN, where Joyce worked as a waitress. Richard (Max) worked in the Iron Ore Mines and raced stock cars with the café being one of his sponsors. After a year of romance, Richard and Joyce purchased a marriage license but their wedding plans were foiled in Hibbing, MN. So on Oct 17, 1953, on their way to Cambridge to visit family, they spontaneously stopped in Mora, MN, where they secured the services of the Justice of the Peace and a city police officer and his wife as witnesses and tied the knot. After their marriage, they continued to live in Kelly Lake for a few years and moved to Cambridge in 1955. In 1956 they moved to their home West of Cambridge, where they built their own house. Richard is survived by his children: Rick Baxter of Jacksonville, FL, Cheryl (Dave) Rogers of Cambridge, Terry (Debby) Baxter of Garner, IA, Connie (Terry) Knutson of Circle Pines, MN, Julie (Bill) Wagner of Lakeville, MN, Melissa (Dave) Woosley of Hastings, MN, Matt (Meredith) Shaw of Big Lake, MN; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 1PM, Thurs, Feb 4, 2021, at New Hope Community Church in Cambridge with Military Honors provided by the Cambridge American Legion Color Guard. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Full obituary to follow.
