SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, Mexico – The Rt. Rev. Albert W. Hillestad, 82, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at his home in San Miguel de Allende.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol J. Hillestad.
Bishop Hillestad was born on July 11, 1924, in New Richmond, Wisconsin. He was consecrated Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Springfield in February of 1972. After he retired from the church, he worked at Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center in Mobile, Alabama. He moved to San Miguel, Mexico in 1989. Albert enjoyed his retirement, was well respected in the community and spent time knotting rugs, volunteering with handicapped children at the Centro de Crecimiento, and spending time with the children in his neighborhood. He lived a full, happy life and was loved by all who met him. He will be greatly missed.
Bishop Albert is survived by his children, Mary Holland, Michael (SoYoung) Hillestad, Lisa (Robert) O'Keefe, William (Julie) Hillestad, James (Kathy) Hillestad, Christina (Dan) Gerstenmaier and Paul Hillestad; 14 grandchildren; three brothers; a sister; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
