Blessed are the ones who die in the Lord, for they rest . . . they rest . . . they rest from their labors. Revelation 14:13

Dr. Lisa Smith Hodges was larger than life, a light in a hurting world that shined through a beautiful face, a beautiful heart, and a brilliant mind onto and into hundreds, maybe thousands, of people . . . all over the world. This light passed away, unexpectedly, following a common surgical procedure, on Tuesday, January 11th. Her family, privately, will celebrate her life at First Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 19th, led by Dr. Jeff Raines.

Lisa was born on October 18, 1971, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Ivan Iverson Smith, Jr., and Gloria Greenlee Smith. She attended Captain Shreve High School and graduated from Wake Forest University, with a Bachelor of Science degree, cum laude. God gifted Lisa with a brilliant mind and compassionate spirit, and she was called to become a healer. She went on to LSU Medical School and graduated with board certification in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. She worked and taught at LSU Medical School for several years, caring for children with infectious diseases and teaching residents and medical students. In the past several years, she was caring for patients at Claiborne Memorial Medical Center.

Lisa loved God, and her faith was strong. She loved the life God created, everything about it, even when life was very difficult. Lisa loved people, all kinds of people. She lit up a room with her infectious personality and wonderful sense of humor. She loved learning and teaching, healing and helping people. She loved animals and gardening and sewing. She taught herself how to sew, how to play the violin, how to grow a garden and cultivate all kinds of seeds. She appreciated all the parts of God's creation and all the ways to enjoy and live life. People were drawn to her vivacious spirit and interest in everything and everyone around her. She lived a very full life, even when it was hard, so her light spread and multiplied and changed the world.

The thing she loved most in life was being a mother to her children. Lisa adored Josie and Daniel. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and strongly encouraged her children's involvement in every way that helped them connect to God. She loved singing in the choir with Josie and watching Daniel, as he assisted in filming the service every week. She made choices and moved mountains, including raising chickens in her garage and spending months at St. Jude's with Josie, to make their lives full and meaningful.

Lisa used her many gifts of compassion, healing, fearlessness, and a yearning to help others by organizing medical mission teams to serve in Kenya, where they treated thousands of people. Her love for the people there led her to sponsor and assist in the Collisa Poultry Project, a chicken farm development to help feed people and give them a way to support themselves. It is now one of the top ten businesses in Kenya.

Lisa loved her family, her wonderful parents and her beloved siblings. Lisa's family describe her this way: "Lisa was real in a world of fake!" "Lisa was the most free-spirited, fearless person I have ever known." "Using the gifts God gave her, she improved the lives of so many." "The things I will miss about my sister: Her witty humor, her smile and laughter, her voice of reason." "Lisa was a vibrant, beautiful soul. She loved life and made life more fun just by being around her. Everyone who knew her loved her. She lived such a full life and spent most of it helping other people."

Lisa was fiercely protective of those she loved, and she used up every ounce of her life in living, serving, helping, and loving. Surely, when she met God on Tuesday, God said, "Well done, my good and faithful servant. Come into your rest."

She's now with her grandparents: Mr. and Mrs. Ivan I. Smith, Sr.; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Ross Greenlee; and her aunts: Sharon Smith Mabus and Martha Greenlee Bean. She is survived by her own parents, Ivan Iverson Smith, Jr., and Gloria Greenlee Smith; her daughter, Josephine Taylor Hodges, and her son, Daniel Woods Hodges, Jr.; her brothers, Trey Smith (Ashley), and Jonathan Ross Smith (Lauren), and her sister, Emily Rebecca Smith; her aunt, Melba Smith Oldham (Parnell); and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to (1) First Baptist Church, 543 Ockley Drive, Shreveport, LA, 71106 or (2) St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
