The remarkable life of Ruby Irene Bergherr White, 98, came to a peaceful close Dec. 28, 2020, one week short of her 99th birthday. Ruby was born Jan. 4, 1922 in Morris. Minnesota to Henry and Linda Eberhard Bergherr. She would grow up to lead a very full life, earning her pilot's license and sailing her 30 foot sailboat through the Gulf of Mexico and up through the Atlantic to Chesapeake Bay wither her husband, Ralph White, an internationally acclaimed artist and professor in the University of Texas Department of Art for 36 years. Sailing was her passion. Ruby met Ralph in Grapevine, Texas and they were married Jan. 12, 195 to begin their life together for 53 years. To this union were born Ralph White Jr., Brett and Kathy, who each grew up to follow their own creative paths. While raising their family in the home they built in Westlake Hills, Ralph & Ruby bought several acres of land overlooking Lake Travis. In time, they began to build on their Commanders Point land with the help of family and friends. It was a slow labor of love over several years, and, when completed, a work of art itself and a mecca of warm hospitality. The house and studio connected by a 60 foot gallery filled with Ralph's work of six decades. Ruby was the soul of hospitality and entertained their host of friends and art clients on a moment's notice. For several years Ruby and friend Doris Walcott owned a Bee Cave gift and dress shop, the Bee Bush, where they designed and made custom fashions. Ruby & Ralph travelled widely, including Europe, Ireland, England, Mexico, Yugoslavia and of course the United States. Ruby audited classes at the University of Texas and enjoyed tennis and bridge witht he other UT faculty wives and friends. She crated beautiful natvie plant gardens at their home. She loved volunteer work, including at Stetson Hospital and the Lake Travis Thrift Shop. She drover her car until she was 96 and stayed current all her days, reading the Statesman daily and thoroughly and voting in every election. Ruby was Shady to her family, named by son Brett in school years. She was dearly loved, enjoyed and admired, and in her last years the heart of the Shady Ladies Lunch Group. Ruby's sense of humor was lifelong and contagious. She is survived by her children Brett (Evie) White of Valley Springs Texas, Kathy (Gary) Whitley of Crowell, Texas and Ralph White Jr. of Arizona; grandchildren Brazier Whitley and Samantha White. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, her parents and her 6 siblings.
