Beverly Price of Shelby, NC passed away on January 28, 2021 at the age of 96. Beverly was a loving mother and grandmother and a lifelong student and educator. She traveled the world extensively making many friends with whom she regularly corresponded.
Beverly was a teacher at Shelby Middle School for 21 years where she taught seventh grade English and Social Studies. Highlights of her career include a scholarship from the NC State Teachers Association to travel and study in Africa and a National Endowment of the Humanities scholarship to study poetry at Vassar College. She loved her students and retired in 1987 to spend more time with her family and travel.
Her travel and learning adventures took her across America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East and were usually affiliated with travel programs sponsored through various colleges and universities. She was a member of the Shelby Friendship Force that visited various destinations abroad and stayed with local families in their homes. They would then reciprocate by hosting the foreign couples in their homes.
She loved telling stories about the countries she visited. Whether it was the small bowls of exotically flavored fish and vegetables in Thailand or the crowded markets of Jordan, she always appreciated the generosity that strangers exhibited when she wanted to learn about their lives. On numerous occasions she was served alcoholic beverages that were part of the local culture. Never much of a drinker, she often tried to find discreet ways of pouring out the drinks in fear of offending her hosts.
Born Beverly McMurray Manous in Albemarle, NC to Sibley Manous and Margaret McMurray Manous. She graduated from Shelby High School, earned a BA from Limestone College and a Masters in Education from Winthrop University.
Beverly was married and divorced from Roy D. Price of Shelby who died in 1981. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Melody and Rick Hord of King Mountain, NC, her son Phil Price of Jacksonville, FL and her grandsons and grand daughters-in-laws Ian and Elizabeth Praught Price of Norwood, MA and Jeremy and Angela De Gregory Price of Saint Augustine, FL.
