Marsha Lea Barker
August 25, 1954 – January 23, 2021

Marsha Lea Barker, 66, formerly of Silver Spring, Maryland, and recently of Rosenberg, Texas, peacefully passed away at home, with her husband by her side, on Saturday, January 23, 2021, following a 21-month battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Marsha was the daughter of Rev. Kenneth R Mullins and Georgia Lea Fox Mullins. Born in Mangum, Oklahoma, Marsha spent her childhood first in Enid, and then in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She lived briefly in Nashville, Tennessee, graduating from McGavock High School. She returned to Oklahoma, attending Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, where she earned a Bachelor of Music Degree, majoring in Vocal Performance. She later continued her education at The University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, where she earned a Master of Library Science Degree.

While at OBU Marsha met Michael David Barker. They married and loved life together for 45 years.

Marsha had a variety of work experiences before settling on her main career. Those experiences included Medical Staff Secretary for Ft. Worth Children’s Hospital, Medical Transcriptionist and Executive Administrative Assistant for the Chaplaincy Department of Louisville General Hospital. The experience with the Chaplaincy Department led Marsha to take Clinical Pastoral Education and become a Chaplain herself.

Marsha loved music and was a talented mezzo soprano. However, Marsha’s love of books and reading eventually motivated her to pursue a career as a librarian. She formally began as a Youth Librarian for a private school in Stuart, Florida, which led to Librarian/Media Specialist at Happy Hill Farm Academy in Granbury, Texas. From there, Marsha became Assistant Manager/Youth Librarian for two different branches of the Dallas Public Library System in Dallas, Texas. She then became Assistant Coordinator for the Northeast Texas Library System, headquartered in Garland, Texas. That position allowed her the opportunity to then become the System Coordinator of the Texas Panhandle Library System, headquartered in Amarillo, Texas.

In 2007 Marsha and her husband moved to Maryland for her new job with Professional Technology Federal Systems (PTFS) as Director of Professional Support Services. She was charged with writing proposals for contracts with the Federal Government, and upon winning the contracts, hiring personnel to fill the positions needed to fulfill the contracts. Many of those contracts were for a variety of government libraries. She later stepped down as Director and filled an important position for one contract that required a Project Manager and Archivist for one of the government agencies at Fort Meade.

Two of Marsha’s lifelong friends since childhood have described her perfectly. “…of all my friends ever, you are the one person in my life that I would describe as delightful. Honestly, we all have our gifts and our deficits. But you, Marsha, are delightful.” And “You were my first true friend. You are embedded in my heart as family. You have been since we were six years old. That will never change. I so admire your intellectual curiosity. You listen carefully and have never been afraid to ask questions. As a result, you are intelligent, clever, and insightful (And don’t suffer fools gladly.) You are fiercely courageous. Facing troubles and obstacles throughout your life that would have sidelined most people, you move forward with strength. You embrace joy and share it with everyone around you. Your laugh is completely infectious, and you are not stingy with it. You are forthright and authentic. You don’t hide behind a mask or worry about other people’s opinions. You are you. Beautiful You. Beautiful Marsha”

In addition to her husband, Marsha is survived by her son Jon Michael Barker, sister Elizabeth Gail Collins, brother Steven K. Mullins, five nieces, two nephews and sixteen grand nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held February 18, 2021 at 1:00 pm, Mount Olivet Cemetery in Paul’s Valley, Oklahoma.
