John Milton Ballard Sr, age 78, passed away Thursday, January 21, 2121, at the Spalding Wellstar Regional Medical Center of covid-19 pneumonia. John was a native of Griffin, Georgia after having been born in Albany, Georgia on October 26, 1942.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Joseph (LJ) Ballard Sr and Julia Smith Ballard and brother Lawrence Joseph Ballard Jr.

From the age of 119 until graduation Griffin High School john lived and worked on the family farm located on Jackson Road in Spalding County. He raised cattle and poultry. He was an active member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and regularly participated in livestock completions at the griffin Spalding County Fairgrounds.

Upon graduation Griffin High School John briefly attended college and worked various jobs until he was drafted in the Army in 1966. He served as a Military Policeman and spent 12 months in Vietnam as well as assignments at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and in upstate New York. Upon leaving the Army John entered his civilian law enforcement career. He served several years at the Griffin Police Department followed by several more years with the Spalding County Sheriff’s Department. He served as a patrolman, jailer, dispatcher, shift sergeant and in facility maintenance when the department moved to its current location in 1985.

John was also a talented carpenter and cabinet maker. He ran his own small business on the side refinishing furniture, building cabinets and remodeling homes. Additionally, he worked in residential construction for several years after leaving law enforcement.

John will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was indeed a true patriot. But first and fore most he loved the Lord. He had great admiration for our military.

Survivors include his son, John Milton Ballard Jr. of Fort Hood, Texas; daughter Michelle Gina Ballard of Covington, Georgia; special friends, Woody Rarrick and family; Linda Wallace and her son Christopher Wallace.

Visitation will be on Monday, February 1, 2021 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Final internment of his remains will be at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. The date of interment will be released by the family at a future date. Masks are requested and social distancing will be practiced. Flowers will be accepted but those desiring may make a contribution to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
