Preston Thomas, a loving son, brother, uncle and friend, departed this life and entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, Illinois.
Preston, the third child of six, was born on April 30, 1963 at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois to the union of Melton and Jean Gilliam Thomas. His father, Melton Thomas, Sr., brothers, Andre’ Thomas and Melton Thomas Jr., maternal grandparents, Leroy and Mozella Gilliam, paternal grandparents, Mose and Evelynn Thomas preceded him in death.
Preston completed his education in the Alton School District and St. Louis Community College at Forest Park. After college, he joined the US Army where he served as a Food Services Specialist while stationed in both Colorado Springs, Colorado and North Korea.
From a young age, he had a natural knack for cooking and creating unique meals. After his military service, he worked as an Executive Chef for several years. In more recent times, he worked for Spectrum Brands Distribution in Edwardsville, Illinois.
Preston lived a full and vibrant life with many wonderful friends and family. His nephews and nieces meant more to him than words can describe. Among them, he was their beloved and favorite uncle. He adored and doted on each and every one and insisted they always remain close. A jokester at heart, he loved teasing and annoying his family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Jean Thomas of Godfrey, IL; two brothers, Moses Gilliam of St. Louis, MO, Anthony (Juanita) Foster of Peoria, IL; three sisters, Donna (Mike) Adiasor of St. Louis, MO, Dawn Mack and Desira (Rodney) Caffey of Alton, IL; sister- in-law, Joy (David) Glenn of Missouri City, Texas; nephews, Blaine Thomas, Cornelius Banks, Johnnie Mack, Jaxon Caffey of Alton, IL, and Andre’ Adiasor of St. Louis, MO; nieces, Regina (Keith) Jones, Corneisha Banks, Bianca Thomas, Jasmine Thomas-Davis, and Brooke Thomas of St. Louis, MO; great- nieces, Divine and Addyson Thomas of Alton, IL, Penelope Bright, Peyton and Paisley Owens of St. Louis, MO; great-nephews, Karson Thomas of Alton, IL, and Carter and Chance Jones of St. Louis, MO; bonus family, Mike, Jaedon, and Lilyana Nicholson of Alton, IL; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and many close friends.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, ten people or less will be allowed in the building at a time for the visitation Sunday, January 31, 2021 from 2:00 pm until the time of service at 3:00 pm at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton with Pastor Laurie Crelly officiating.

Military Burial Rites will be performed by Alton VFW #1308.
