Ella Elizabeth Cartwright Brooks passed away peacefully of natural causes on December 8, 2020, in her Olympia, Washington, home with family at her bedside. She was 89 years old. Ella was born on October 26, 1931, in Hertford, North Carolina, to John and Mannie Cartwright (both deceased). She had two brothers, Jay Cartwright (deceased), Wallace Cartwright (deceased); and sister, Nellie White (deceased).
Ella met her husband, Alan Brooks, while they were both working for the FBI in Washington, D.C. They were married for 53 years before he preceded her in death January 6, 2007. Ella and Alan have three sons, Alan Brooks Jr. of Olympia, David Brooks of Olympia, and Tyler Brooks of Seattle.
Alan and Ella moved from Medford, Oregon, to Olympia in September of 1969. There they raised their three sons and put down roots, establishing many friends both personal and professional. Ella has four grandchildren, Christopher Brooks, Tiffani Donner, Zachery Brooks (deceased), and Ashley Siwwi; and four great grandchildren, Ella Donner, Vaylie Siwwi, Isla Brooks, and Krue Donner.
Ella enjoyed having friends and family over for special occasions and dinner parties. She was an excellent cook and homemaker. People often commented on her tasteful home décor. She belonged to the Valley Athletic Club, the Red Hat Society, and a book club. She trained for and ran a marathon with the Rain Runners of Olympia. Professionally, she worked for the Department of Natural Resources.
Alan and Ella loved to travel. Together they enjoyed visiting other countries and experiencing the many different cultures. They were also involved in the Rotary Clubs and met many lifelong friends through work with the Rotary Foundation, a charitable division of Rotary whose funds are used to “Do good in the world,” such as the eradication of polio throughout the world.
